When was New Braunfels founded?

New Braunfels was settled and founded in March of 1845. A German Prince, Carl of Solms-Braunfels, named the city after his hometown, Braunfels, in Germany. In December 1845, Texas became a U.S. state, ending any ambitions the prince had of making New Braunfels a German principality.

Where is New Braunfels located?

New Braunfels is in Central Texas, within the Texas Hill Country in southeastern Comal County. According to Google Maps, the city lies about 19 miles southwest of San Marcos, 33 miles northeast of San Antonio, 48 miles southwest of Austin, 174 miles east of Houston, 171 miles northwest of Corpus Christi and 240 miles southwest of the Dallas-Fort Worth area

Why is New Braunfels considered a German town?

New Braunfels was founded by German settlers in 1845 and named after the German city of Braunfels in the state of Hesse. To this day, New Braunfels retains its German heritage, as seen in its architecture, annual festivals like Wurstfest, and the local "Texas German" dialect spoken by some residents.

As of 2022, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that New Braunfels had a population of approximately 104,709; in 2020, the U.S. Census estimated that New Braunfels had 91,319 residents. In two years, more than 13,000 people moved to the city.
