About Winston-Salem, NC

Known as the “City of Arts and Innovation,” Winston-Salem is a product of two neighboring towns located in northwestern North Carolina. Winston was established in 1849 and Salem was established in 1766. Salem’s early economy was based on trade and, later on, textiles. 

Winston’s early economy consisted also of textiles as well as tobacco and educational institutions. In 1913 the two towns merged, creating Winston-Salem. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, which produces Camel cigarettes, and the Hanes textile factory had a major influence during the early days of Winston-Salem and employed much of the town. 

In addition to R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, other major businesses that originated in Winston-Salem include Wachovia Bank and Trust, Hanes Corporation, Shell Oil Company, and Krispy Kreme. 

Today, Winston-Salem has a strong fine arts and theater culture as well as an economy based in high tech and medical research. 

Top Winston-Salem attractions include Reynolda House Museum of American Art, Old Salem Museums and Gardens, West End Historic District, Black Mountain Chocolate Factory, and Historic Bethabara Park.
