Five Outdoor Adventures New Homebuyers Will Enjoy in Bakersfield

Bakersfield is known for its strong ties to agriculture and energy and its country music legacy, which earned it the nickname "Nashville West."

But it's also surrounded by outdoor adventures, making the city ideal for anyone who loves going outside.

At the southern edge of California's Central Valley and within reach of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Bakersfield offers fast access to national forests, rivers, wildlife preserves and even ski slopes—all within an hour's drive.

You'll find something you love whether you're into weekend hikes, camping trips or a quick escape into nature.

If your family recently moved to Bakersfield for job opportunities, affordable housing and lower living costs, the stunning views and various ways to unplug and explore are welcome bonuses.

If you and your family are looking to purchase a new construction home or recently moved to Bakersfield for job opportunities, the low cost of living or affordable housing, the stunning views and incredible ways to unplug and explore are welcome bonuses.

Check out these five outdoor adventures when you've finished moving in.

1. Discover the Wind Wolves Preserve

Just 45 minutes southeast of the city, Wind Wolves Preserve feels like another world. Spanning over 30 square miles of grasslands, canyons and rugged peaks, it offers a peaceful retreat without a long drive. Come spring—or after a good rainfall—the rolling hills burst into bloom with colorful wildflowers.

Locals love the miles of hiking trails that lead to sweeping views and winding paths through prime wildflower areas. It's also a great spot to glimpse rare wildlife, including the endangered San Joaquin kit fox and blunt-nosed leopard lizard. While it's lesser known than major parks, it's no less impressive.

2. Explore the California Living Museum (CALM)

Located just 15 minutes from downtown, CALM blends the best of a zoo, botanical garden and natural history museum—all outdoors. Families especially enjoy the walking trails, wildlife habitats and the miniature train that winds around the park.

CALM focuses on California's native species in natural-style enclosures, including black bears, mountain lions, raptors and many more remarkable animals. It's a favorite for locals who want to learn more about the region's ecology in a hands-on, family-friendly setting.

3. Hike and Bike in Sequoia National Forest

Sequoia National Forest is in Bakersfield's backyard, with trailheads near our Morning Star Ranch community in Bakersfield. The forest stretches for miles and features over 1,100 hiking trails, many of which also welcome mountain bikes.

While Sequoias's largest and most famous groves lie farther north, the areas closest to Bakersfield offer incredible hiking, peaceful campgrounds and sweeping views. Take a trail along the Kern River or challenge yourself on a route that climbs Oak Ridge or Breckenridge Mountain. Either way, you'll feel a world away.

4. Camp at Kern River Campground

Between Lake Ming and CALM, the Kern River Campground is the perfect place to set up a weekend basecamp. Pitch your tent along the river or park your RV under shady trees, then head out for hiking, fishing and more.

You'll be close to everything—bike paths, disc golf at Sharktooth Mountain, trails in Hart Memorial Park and even ponds where you can cool off in the summer. The Kern County Soccer Park is also nearby if you want to catch a local match or enjoy the wide-open green space.

5. Hit the Slopes at Alta Sierra Ski Resort

Yes, Bakersfield has a ski resort within easy driving distance. Just 50 miles east in the Greenhorn Mountains, Alta Sierra Ski Resort is a hidden gem with tree-lined runs, a snow tubing hill and panoramic views of the Sequoia National Forest.

It's perfect for skiers of all levels, with separate areas for beginners, intermediates and more experienced visitors. There's even a terrain park if you want to work on tricks. The resort typically operates from late December through mid-March, with weekend hours offering the most lift access.
