When was Denver founded?

In early 1858, the rival towns of Auraria and St. Charles were established on opposite sides of Cherry Creek following the discovery of gold. In November of 1858, William Larimer, Jr. renamed the town to Denver City in honor of James W. Denver, the governor of the Kansas Territory. By 1860, Denver City and Auraria had consolidated. In 1861, with the establishment of the Colorado Territory, Denver City officially became Denver. Colorado became a state 15 years later in 1876.
