How was Greeley founded initially?

Nathan Meeker founded the Union Temperance Colony in 1870, with more than a hundred settlers, with help from Horace Greeley and an editorial advertisement published in Greeley's New-York Tribune. The Union Colony initially permitted no saloons or liquor stores. The New-York Tribune's editorial advertisement promised "remarkable healthfulness," "decided fertility and facility of cultivation," along with plentiful natural resources and "beauty of landscape and scenery with exception from disagreeable neighbors."
